After receiving the cat, the shelter staff noticed that the cat was neutered and then scanned him for a microchip. Microchips are not as common in cats but as luck would have it, this guy had one. When Stephanie Wagner, who was working at the time, called the microchip company and traced the chip back to the shelter that chipped him. When Wagner called the Guilford County Animal Shelter she was surprised to find out the shelter was in North Carolina in the Greensboro area. They told her that the cat was 8-years-old and had been adopted from them in 2006 and they gave her the contact information for the adopter. Wagner didn't have much hope with it having been so long ago but called just on the slim chance of finding an owner. The number was still current and Wagner was able to contact Linda Thompson who had adopted the cat from the North Carolina Shelter. Thompson actually lived in North Carolina as well and wasn't sure if he was her cat or not so Wagner sent a picture of the cat to Thompson for verification. Thompson recognized the cat immediately as her Mulder. She said that he had been missing for several years and she had no clue how he made his way to Kentucky. Thompson is a very rare and dedicated owner. She loved her cat and missed him so much she drove over eight hours one way to reclaim Mulder and take him home. This story shows the importance of getting your pets microchipped, because after several years and several states, without the chip, Mulder would not have found his way home. When Wagner followed up to see how Mulder was, Thompson had this to say, “This Thanksgiving we have much to be thankful for! We lost Mulder in 2007 when he got out of the house and ran. We live in North Carolina, so you can imagine our surprise when we received a call this month from the Ohio County Animal Shelter in Kentucky telling us that they had him there. If it were not for the microchip we never would have been reunited with him. Thank you to the Ohio County Animal Shelter for contacting us and for taking good care of him while we arranged the drive to pick Mulder up and bring him home. I urge all pet owners to microchip their pets.” We at the Ohio County Animal Shelter thank Linda and Chuck Thompson For being so dedicated to Moulder.
