During the February 25 meeting of the Ohio County Fiscal Court, representatives of the Ohio County Artist’s Guild (OCAG) came before the court to tell the court of the different ways the guild helps promote the arts. The guild also asked the court for money to help pay expenses. The goal of the OCAG is to promote arts in all various forms. The OCAG displays art in the Guild House in Beaver Dam and hopes to promote the local artists in Ohio County. The members of the OCAG have been in the Ohio County Schools working with the students and offering classes to students for fun and to develop artistic talents. The OCAG has hosted several events in Ohio County, including the Shades of Blue Festival in Beaver Dam, and has received support from local businesses and organizations, as well as private citizens. The guild is a non-profit organization, so it relies on donations to fund its programs and pay expenses. The OCAG rarely charges for the events it presents, but there are many expenses in putting on a free event. The OCAG asked the fiscal court for $6,000. According to OCAG, this amount would pay for its basic expenses for one year, including rent on the Ohio County Artists Guild House. The amount would also free the guild up to offer more art programs and events for the citizens of Ohio County.Third District Magistrate Brandon Thomas said he would give the OCAG $1,000 out of his discretionary fund. He felt the OCAG was providing kids, who may not be interested in sports, another avenue of interest. Thomas called the OCAG “a worthwhile cause.”Second District Magistrate Jason Bullock also gave the OCAG $1,000 out of his discretionary fund. Bullock has given money to OCAG in the past to help with events and programs.First District Magistrate Michael McKenney also pledged $1,000 of his discretionary fund to the OCAG. He told the representatives of OCAG he was excited about the things the guild is doing in Beaver Dam.Ohio County Judge-Executive David Johnston said he believed the request for $6,000 would be met, pointing out the OCAG was half way there after the three magistrates’ pledges. He then thanked OCAG for all it has done throughout Ohio County.Fifth District Magistrate Kenny Autry also pledged $1,000 from his discretionary fund, saying he was glad Ohio County has volunteers working to promote the arts in Ohio County.McKenney challenged Johnston and Fourth District Magistrate Larry Keown to also give $1,000 of their discretionary fund to the OCAG.Keown told the members from OCAG, “It’ll get funded.”The Ohio County Guild House is in downtown Beaver Dam next to the old post office.
