The Ohio County DECA program also earned first place in Chapter Increase in Membership. Ohio County Schools Superintendent Scott Lewis presented each member with a certificate of recognition. — Ohio County Schools have had several missed days due to snow and ice. Those missed days led to June 3 being the possible last day for students, but that date has changed. Lewis told the school board, with the help of Assistant School Superintendent Seth Southard, the Board of Education has figured out a way to make May 30 the last day of school for students. Lewis said Ohio County Schools had a 173 day calendar and the state requires a minimum 170 day calendar, but the state also requires the schools have a minimum of 1,062 classroom hours. Even after the missed snow days, the school system would meet the 170 day minimum, but not the 1,062 hour minimum. Lewis said the minimum hours were based on the school within the district with the least amount of classroom hours. The school within the district with the least amount of classroom hours was the Ohio County High School. To remedy the situation, the high school will be forgoing the ten minute morning break for the rest of the school year. This extra ten minutes a day will put the high school over the 1,062 classroom hours limit, thus allowing the students to get out of school on May 30. Lewis said that even if the schools missed one more day of school, the school system would still hit the 170 day minimum and the 1,062 hour minimum. The Ohio County High School would likely hold graduation on Saturday, May 31. Lewis recommended the school board amend the school calendar. Board member Jay Raymond made a motion to amend the school calendar. Board member Matt Gilstrap seconded the motion. The motion passed with a unanimous vote. Board member Dwight Raymond was not present for the meeting.
