The top-ranked Class 2A Caldwell County's Tigers raced to a 49-0 halftime lead Friday night and went on to hand Ohio County its first loss of the gridiron season by a final of 55-26. Tiger junior quarterback Elijah Sindelar, who is being recruited by several Division I colleges, hit on 11 of 14 passes in the first half for 212 yards and two touchdowns.
Ohio County (2-1) played without fullback/linebacker Sam Griffin who sat out with a knee injury. He is expected to return next week.
Caldwell County got out of the gate quickly with running back Jaylen Boyd scoring on a 26-yard run. With Sindelar coming in with a lot of hype about his passing skills, he started off his night with an 18-yard scamper into the end zone nearly untouched giving Caldwell a 14-0 lead.
Ohio County got off to a slow start for the third time in as many games this season as the offense struggled to get the ball to midfield for most of the first half. Caldwell County was able to get into OC's backfield seemingly at well and while Eagle quarterback Jake Griffin kept several plays alive by scrambling, few plays ended with much, if any, gain it yardage.
Sindelar picked up his first touchdown pass later in the first quarter on a 44-yard pass to Boyd. Caldwell finished a hot first quarter with a three-yard run by Dee Cain ending the first quarter with Ohio County down 28-0.
Tiger Josh Young got into the scorebook with a 27-yard touchdown reception from Sindelar with the PAT setting the scoring at 35-0 in Caldwell's favor. Scoring the for first half was capped off by Caldwell County's JaMichael Ellis who scored on a one-yard run followed up by a 39-yard scamper making the score 49-0 heading into the locker rooms.
Caldwell kicked off second half scoring with a two-yard run by Tiger Zavion Henderson. A failed PAT left the score at 55-0 in favor of the Tigers before Griffin scored on a nine-yard run cutting the score to 55-6 after OC also missed the PAT.
The fourth quarter for Ohio County was much like the first quarter for Caldwell as the Eagles scored early and often with OC's Cory Crowe and Brice Phelps scoring touchdowns on short runs cutting Caldwell's lead to 55-19. Eagle senior cornerback Brennon Leach scored OC's final touchdown on a 25-yard interception return. Leach has an interception in each of Ohio County's games this season.
