The National Weather Service in Louisville issued a Special Weather Statement for Ohio Co. yesterday and it has now issued a Winter Storm Advisory for Sunday evening. The Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect for Ohio Co. from 7 p.m. Sunday night until 11 a.m. Monday morning.Rain will begin to fall across the region by late Sunday afternoon. This rain should start transitioning to snow across southern Indiana by mid evening Sunday with the transition occurring by late evening along the Ohio River. Narrow bands of heavier snow are possible in the advisory area from midnight to daybreak Monday.Snow accumulations of one to three inches are forecast with a few spots possibly getting four inches. These accumulations will cause slick spots on area roads and will make for a difficult rush hour commute Monday morning. In addition to slick spots, heavier snow rates will reduce visibilities. Driving at night in the snow will make it difficult to see the road ahead of you. Roads and bridges will be slick. Use extra caution if traveling.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) road crews have been out since late Sunday night preparing for the first blast of winter weather to blanket a large part of the Commonwealth. As temperatures dropped throughout the day Sunday and rain turned to snow, crews were out treating roads. The heaviest snowfalls began after midnight and road crews began plowing and treating roadways across a wide swath of the state. “The safety of Kentucky’s roadways is the focal point of our maintenance program this time of year,” KYTC Secretary Mike Hancock said. “Our snow and ice teams are on the job even before winter weather hits. I’m proud of their professionalism and dedication to service.” Nearly 2,000 KYTC employees are available for efforts to treat and clear more than 60,000 lane miles of roads. KYTC outfits more than 1,000 trucks with front-end blades and salt spreading equipment. An additional 382 snow removal contractors are available to assist when needed. While road crews are out treating roads, the cabinet reminds motorists to:
  • Exercise greater caution when driving. Slow down.
  • Be prepared for slick conditions.
  • Give a wide berth to snow plows and other heavy highway equipment.
  • Eliminate distractions while behind the wheel.
Condition reports on major routes are available by calling 511 or by logging onto the 511 traffic and travel information website, 511.ky.gov.

The snow appears to be finished, but a cold winter blast will move into Ohio Co. later tonight.  According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, a few more snow showers are possible late this afternoon into early this evening. A few of theses showers may be moderate in nature, which could drop visibilities over short distances while dropping light accumulations. Very cold air will invade the region behind this morning's storm. Wind chills will be in the 0 to 5 degree below zero range Tuesday morning and in the single digits Wednesday morning. Forecasted lows tonight will be in the mid to upper teens with highs on Tuesday topping out in the mid to upper 20s. Tuesday night will see lows once again drop into the upper teens. If you have to be out in the cold, be sure to dress in several layers of clothing. Pipes can freeze because of the extreme cold, so let faucets drip overnight. Also be sure to care of your pets by making sure they have a warm place to stay. If you're traveling, be prepared for any car trouble or any long periods of exposure to the cold.

Ohio County Hospital nursing staff practicing putting on the PPE (personal protective equipment) suits.[/caption] SUBMITTED by the Ohio County Hospital Infectious diseases have been in the news lately, and although the risk of a case of the Ebola virus in Ohio County is remote, the healthcare professionals at Ohio County Hospital (OCH) have been working to make sure our community is prepared. OCH has also been preparing for the more seasonal threat of respiratory outbreaks such as influenza (Flu) and contagious Enterovirus D68, which can be particularly difficult for children. Chris Freels, R.N., director of Quality & Infection Preventionist at Ohio County Hospital, says “It’s important to remember that the likelihood of Ebola in our community is very, very low. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has said only those individuals who have traveled to Liberia, Sierra Leone or Guinea in the past 21 days or those who have had close contact with a confirmed Ebola case should be concerned about contracting the disease. Nonetheless, we have the recommended infection control and isolation procedures and supplies in place, and are carefully following CDC guidelines and staying abreast of updates." Ohio County Hospital has a well-developed emergency response plan for all infectious disease. Our facility works cooperatively with other area public health and emergency response agencies to engage in drills to enhance our preparedness level. Recently hospital personnel drilled in the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Included in this training was the proper donning and removal of the full-body PPE suits, which included step-by-step disinfection of hands process with specific sequencing for removal of each piece of equipment and hand-washing. Also included in the training was use of a model of the hood that protects the health care worker’s neck from exposure. To learn more about infectious diseases, review the information on the CDC's website at www.cdc.gov. To receive news and updates from the Ohio County Hospital, be sure to Like their Facebook page.

OC Fiscal Court allows Armstrong Coal use of road, to install 3,500 ft. of waterline

During the November 13 meeting of the Ohio County Fiscal Court, the fiscal court allowed Armstrong Coal to use a county road for trucking, refunded a deposit to a logging company, rejected all bids for a courtroom renovation and agreed to add thousands of feet of waterline to Flint Springs Road. — Ohio County Judge Executive David Johnston informed the fiscal court Armstrong Coal wanted to use a part of Lone Star Road in Centertown for the company’s trucks. Johnston said the road would not have to be closed and the county could issue an oversize/overweight permit to the coal company. The section of road to be used is between Powerline Road and Wallace Loop in Centertown. Armstrong Coal will be in charge of maintaining the entire road, even though it won’t be using the entire road. When Armstrong Coal is finished with the road, the company has agreed to pay for chipping and sealing for the entire length of the road. Johnston made a motion the fiscal court approve a contract with Armstrong Coal for the use of a section of Lone Star Road, without closing the road. The motion was seconded by Fourth District Magistrate Larry Keown. After a roll call vote, the motion passed unanimously. — Johnston turned the meeting over to Keown to discuss the refund of a deposit to a logging company. Keown explained that in the past, Rippy Logging was allowed to use Bud Baughn Road, in Fordsville, while they were logging in the area. Keown said he and county road foreman Jeff Miller determined the logging company had done some damage to the road. The county asked Rippy Logging to pay $3,500 to repair the damage done to the road by their logging trucks. According to Keown, the county had a “difficult” time getting the money from the logging company, until it needed access to the road again. Rippy Logging ended up paying the county $3,500 to repair the road and another $3,200 as a deposit, in case it further damaged the road while using it for the other logging job. Keown informed the court the logging company did not damage the road this time and he thought it should return the $3,200 to Rippy Logging. Keown made a motion the fiscal court refund the deposit of $3,200 to Rippy Logging and authorize county treasurer Anne Melton to issue the check. Fifth District Magistrate Kenny Autry seconded the motion. After a roll call vote, the motion passed unanimously. — The fiscal court advertised for bids to renovate the District Court Room on the third floor of the Community Center. The bids were opened and all were higher than what the county and the Administrative Office of the Courts were willing to pay. Both entities agreed to split the cost of the renovation. After some discussion on what work the fiscal court could do itself, Keown made a motion to reject all bids. Autry seconded the motion. After a roll call vote, the motion passed unanimously. It was decided the court would change the bid specifications and re-bid the project. — Autry made a motion the fiscal court approve the installation of 3,500 feet of waterline on Flint Springs Road at a cost of $10,500. First District Magistrate Michael McKenney seconded the motion. Autry said the Ohio County Water District agreed to provide the labor for free. The $10,500 will pay for PVC pipe and materials. After a roll call vote, the motion passed unanimously. The project will be added to the Waterline Prioritization List, which will be reviewed in early 2015.

Little Elijah McIntyre was out with his father, Michael McIntyre, and bagged a 19-point non-typical buck last week. While many hunters hope to harvest a deer like this just once in their lifetime, this was Elijah's first deer ever.  According to Fish & Wildlife data, typically Ohio County sees over 1,000 deer harvested annually.
