David Johnston

[caption id="attachment_19103" align="alignright" width="267"]David Johnston David Johnston[/caption] Submitted by David Johnston, Republican incumbent Ohio County Judge-Executive  Dear Ohio County voters: My name is David Johnston, your present Judge-Executive, and a candidate for re-election. I have served one term and accomplished a lot, including having one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state. This is due, in part, to the incentive to Armstrong Coal and making our county friendly to business. We have replaced or done major repair on over 60 bridges in Ohio County. We have surfaced or resurfaced over 100 miles of roads in the county, and done other work to improve roads. The Community Center and Courthouse has seen much renovation and repair. We passed an animal control ordinance and built a new animal shelter. These efforts as well as working with the rescues and foster homes has reduced our stray problem and nearly eliminated having to destroy adoptable pets. We have added to our parks and other things to improve the lives of all who reside in Ohio County. We have upgraded equipment in each department including computers and trucks. For the first time, we purchased a new fleet of police vehicles. We contributed to our fire departments much (including a new fire station) in order that they can protect us. We also added numerous fire hydrants. These things have reduced insurance costs for many homeowners. In addition to these accomplishments, we have set aside a $600,000 emergency fund and have reduced the county's debt substantially. I want to serve you another four years to improve the quality of life for all of Ohio County. I want to see our new economic development plan implemented. In another four years, we can have most of our roads where people lived paved. My vision is to make Ohio County an even better place to live.

Hartford to purchase new police vehicle

PoliceReports615

During the April 24 meeting of the Hartford City Council, the city council approved a motion to purchase a new vehicle for the Hartford Police Department. At the February meeting, the council agreed to advertise for bids and HPD Chief Leroy Embry informed the council it received one bid. The bid was for a 2014 Ford Explorer Police Interceptor from Moore Ford in Hartford for $25,978. It’s the same vehicle the city purchased last year for the HPD. It was said the Moore Ford bid was around $4,000 cheaper than the state contractor bid. Delivery time on the new police interceptor would be around two to three months, according to Embry. The reason for the delay is the vehicle is a special order and is built after ordering. Council member Bob Clements made a motion to accept the Moore Ford bid and purchase the police interceptor. Council member Roxanne Allen seconded the motion. The motion passed by a 4-0 vote. Next the council discussed how to pay for the new police vehicle. For the one it bought last year, the city had budgeted around half the amount in the General Fund and the Occupational Tax Fund made up the difference. There was no more money in the General Fund budgeted for the purchase of a police vehicle in this fiscal year. Council member Tony Ward made a motion the city pay for the new police vehicle out of the Occupational Tax Fund. Council member George Chinn seconded the motion. The motion passed with a 4-0 vote. Council members Jerry Scoggins and Cindy McEnroe were not present for the meeting.

A nine-run sixth inning outburst by visiting Logan County spelled a 14-9 loss for Ohio County High’s fast-pitch softball team Thursday at Russell Field.  The home team led 6-5 entering the fateful at-bat.

The lead exchanged hands three times in the earlier innings before the Lady Cougars sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the sixth, rapping out eight hits and taking advantage of an OCHS error.  Ohio County tried to rally in their final at-bat, scoring three times Madison Bennett’s RBI single, a Logan County error, two walks, and a hit batter.  But a strikeout with the bases loaded ended the game.

Madison Bennett and Morgan Bennett each had three hits for the Lady Eagles while Maranda Stewart hit safely twice.  Rachel Barnett had four hits for the Lady Cougars with Madison Abbott and winning pitcher Victoria Cates each collecting three.
