Newsboys concert draws big crowd

The Beaver Dam Amphitheater held its first concert on Saturday, Oct. 4, with Insulated and Brasher/Bogue opening for Joe Diffie and Lonestar.

The Newsboys concert this past Friday drew the Beaver Dam Amphitheater's biggest crowd to date, with some believing the next show will be even bigger. During Monday night's meeting of the Beaver Dam City Commission, the city commission, along with the president of the Beaver Dam Tourism Commission, Jason Tierney, discussed the Newsboys concert and upcoming events at the Beaver Dam Amphitheater. Both Tierney and Mayor Paul Sandefur agreed the Newsboys concert was a "great show." The size of the crowd was estimated to be around 2,500 people. According to Sandefur, there were attendees from at least 28 different counties and at least seven states, including Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina. With a total of 2,500 people, the Newsboys concert was the best attended show yet, at the amphitheater. Tierney believes the Merle Haggard concert on May 29 has the potential to bring in even more people. When asked if there was room for a bigger crowd than 2,500, both Tierney and Sandefur agreed there was more than enough room. The seating capacity for the amphitheater is around 4,500 people. In addition to the Newsboys concert being a public success, Tierney believed the tourism commission made "a little money" on the show, but making money on events is not the goal. Bringing tourism dollars to Ohio County is the main goal of the tourism commission. Tierney expressed his thanks to the volunteers who helped make the concert a success. There was a need for 18 volunteers to help unload and reload over 43,000 pounds of band equipment. "It was a lot of hard work, but a lot of people chipped in," Tierney said. "Everybody should be proud of this community because we had a lot of people step up." Tierney said there were no complaints from the bands about the amphitheater. In fact, the Newsboys expressed an interest in coming back to Beaver Dam in the future. The Haggard ticket sales are doing well with reports of attendees coming from as far west as Denver, as far south as Alabama and as far north as Wisconsin. As the discussion wound down, Tierney teased some of the upcoming events for the rest of the season. Those include a country music concert on July 4, a Jason Crabb concert on July 18 and a rock concert on Sept. 12. Other events will be announced as they are confirmed. To purchase tickets for the Haggard concert, visit Young Hardware or Consignment Connection. You can also order tickets online at beaverdamtourism.org

(Photos submitted)[/caption] In conjunction with Teacher Appreciation Week and recognizing Ohio County High School’s 50th year of existence, OCHS honored a large group of retired teachers Thursday, May 7, with a luncheon in the school’s Media Center. Those invited to the luncheon included all teachers who retired from OCHS or who taught there and retired after working at the school system’s Central Office. On hand were an estimated 35 retirees along with their guests, with all having an enjoyable time seeing each other again and reminiscing. They enjoyed a meal of barbecue from Moonlite B-B-Q along with desserts prepared by OCHS’ Culinary Arts classes. Centerpieces were made by the school’s Floral Design classes. Special OCHS Eagle ceramic sculptures, made by OCHS’ Art classes were also presented to all retirees along with prepared videos from OCHS annuals showing pictures of those in attendance while they taught at the school. The CD also included a touching “In Memoriam” section, showing pictures of deceased faculty members and administrators. Welcoming addresses were made by Randy Brown of OCHS’ Social Studies department, head principal Greg Decker, and OCS superintendent Scott Lewis. Following the meal, viewing of the CDs — as well as the 50th anniversary lip dub video produced by the OCHS Social Studies department earlier this year — Decker gave those interested a guided tour of the school which has had several additions and renovations since its original construction in 1965. During an April 28 special-called meeting, the Ohio County Fiscal Court discussed the budget for Fiscal Year 2015-2016. This was the third budget workshop the court had. After discussion of health insurance costs and road department raises for next year, First District Magistrate Sam Small made a motion to approve the first reading of the Fiscal Year 2015-2016 budget. Second District Magistrate Jason Bullock seconded the motion. After a roll call vote, the first reading passed unanimously. The budget was sent to the Kentucky Department of Local Government for approval. Ohio County Judge-Executive David Johnston said he didn’t expect any issues with the budget and the fiscal court would probably vote on the second reading at its May 26 meeting. — Immediately after passing the first reading of the Fiscal Year 2015-2016 budget, Fourth District Magistrate Larry Keown made a motion that 75 percent of the unanticipated revenues from the 2015-2016 budget be put into a special account for the road fund. The unanticipated revenue is to be split by percentage of roads, and used by magistrates for chip and seal, blacktop, crack sealing and patching. This account should be paid to the road department quarterly starting July 1, 2015. Fifth District Magistrate Larry Morphew seconded the motion for discussion. Johnston said he would support the motion as long as the county could review the matter, if the county was ever in need of emergency funds. After a roll call vote, the motion passed unanimously.
