With a 7-1 win Saturday afternoon over Ohio County at Leach Field, the Muhlenberg County Mustangs claimed the top seed in the upcoming 10th District Baseball Tournament. Saturday’s win, coupled with a 4-3 extra-inning win Friday night at Greenville, gave the Mustangs a 4-0 mark versus district teams with the Eagles 2-2 and McLean County 0-4.
This year’s district will be played the week of May 19 at Ohio County High’s field.
Friday at Muhlenberg County’s field, a pair of late errors allowed the tying and winning runs to score in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ohio County had rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game in the top of the seventh, then took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth on a hit batsman, two walks, and another hit batter forcing in the run.
Eagle pitcher Chris Logsdon retired MCHS’ leadoff hitter in the last of the seventh, then gave up consecutive singles. A fly ball out was next but then came the errors that allowed the deciding runs to score. Logsdon went the distance scattering six hits while striking out four.
