During the March 10 meeting of the Beaver Dam City Commission, the commission approved the second reading of an ordinance to request a loan for the amphitheater project, agreed to let the Ohio County Little League use the Beaver Dam Park and applied for a grant to purchase crumb rubber for the park.
— At the Jan. 13 city commission meeting, the commission approved the first reading of an ordinance officially requesting a loan from the Kentucky League of Cities for the Beaver Dam Park’s amphitheater project.
At the March 10 meeting, the commission had the second reading of the ordinance. Commissioner Sandy Robinson made a motion to approve the second reading. Commissioner Kevin Davis seconded the motion. The motion passed with a unanimous vote.
— Beaver Dam City Superintendent Larry Carter told the city commission he received an email from the Ohio County Little League requesting the use of the Beaver Dam Park for its regular season baseball games and tournament.
The OC Little League also requested permission to use the park for Wednesday night games. It seems the league had a record number of kids that signed up to play ball. Carter said there were 15 girls softball teams, 11 rookie league teams, seven major league teams and five minor league teams. The league has over 150 more kids this year than last.
The OC Little League plans to schedule games on eight Wednesdays with each team only playing one Wednesday game. This will provide the league an additional 64 games to compensate for the huge number of new players.
According to Carter, the league has spoken with all the coaches, and except for one coach who can’t make it to a Wednesday night game, everyone is on board for the change.
After some discussion, the commission seemed to be in agreement to allow the Wednesday night games, as long as it doesn’t offend anyone and kids aren't penalized if they can’t play on Wednesday.
Davis made a motion to allow the Ohio County Little League to use the ball fields at the Beaver Dam Park. Commissioner Charles Patton seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
— Sandefur informed the commission the city had the opportunity to apply for the 2014 Kentucky League of Cities (KLC) Safety Grant. The city applies for the grant every year. Usually the grant is a 50/50 match, meaning the city must match 50 percent of the grant total to receive the grant.
This year the grant is for $11,860, but the city was only awarded $2,925, meaning it must come up with $8,935 to receive the $2,925. The grant will be used for crumb rubber to be spread around playground equipment at the Beaver Dam Park. The city has also applied for another crumb rubber grant to be awarded in April.
The city could decline the 2014 KLC grant and see if it were awarded the crumb rubber grant in April, but if it doesn’t get that grant, the city will have to purchase the crumb rubber itself. If the city takes the 2014 KLC grant, the paperwork has to be turned in by April 1. The other crumb rubber grant will be awarded later in April.
Davis thought the city had no choice but to accept the 2014 KLC grant and made a motion to do so. Robinson seconded the motion. After a short discussion, the motion passed unanimously.
