Daviess County prevailed over the Ohio County Lady Eagles 64-63 Thursday night in triple overtime at the DCHS gym. Thursday's matchup was was one of two of the top three teams — records-wise — in the Third Region.
The host Lady Panthers took an early lead and were on top 12-7 after one quarter. Daviess County moved out to a 24-11 edge midway in the second period before a 7-1 run by the Lady Eagles trimmed the margin to 25-18 by halftime.
Daviess County again moved out to a double-digit lead early in the third quarter, at 31-20, before Ohio County ran off 14 consecutive points--including four Sarah Stone three-point hoops — to grab their first lead of the game. The Lady Eagles clung to a 36-35 advantage going into the fourth quarter, one that saw four tie scores. Sequoya Huff's free throws with :15.9 left knotted the score at 47-47 where the period ended, putting the game into overtime.
In the first overtime, Ohio County took a quick 50-47 lead and held that three-point edge until a Rachel Holland three-point basket tied the contest at 54-54, forcing a second extra period. That period saw Daviess County take a three-point edge at 57-54, but the Lady Eagles came back to go ahead 58-57 on back-to-back Huff hoops. Sydni Saalwaechter's basket put DCHS back up 59-58 before Lady Eagle Alyssia Baker knocked down a three-point shot for a 61-59 Ohio County lead. Lady Panther center Emma Johnson scored the tying basket with :20, sending the game into the third overtime.
Johnson opened the third overitime with another bucket followed by Saalwaechter's free throw for a 64-61 Lady Panther advantage. Baker hit two free throws for Ohio County to cut the margin to 64-63, but that would turn out to be the final as Jessica Holland blocked Baker's three-point try in the final seconds of the game.
Jessica Holland led all scorers with 22 points while Johnson added 14 and Saalwaechter 10 for DCHS. Stone topped Ohio County with 19 followed by Baker's 18 and 12 from Huff. Kiana Barrett led all rebounders with nine, as Ohio County won the rebounding battle 38-30. Tailer Turner had five assists and Huff four for OCHS.
