Former Muhlenberg North coach Steve Sparks has been hired to take over the reins of Ohio County High’s boys’ basketball program next year, replacing Matt Brigance who resigned after the 2014-‘15 season. Sparks, a Central City native, will be returning to the sidelines for the first time since the consolidation of Muhlenberg North and South High Schools in 2009.
Sparks played basketball for the Central City Golden Tide and returned to mentor the girls’ basketball program at his alma mater for six seasons after graduating from Western Kentucky University. He then moved to the-then new Muhlenberg North High where he headed the girls’ team for three years before taking the boys’ head coaching job in 1996-‘97.
Over the last 12 years of his tenure as Stars coach, Sparks’ teams won 282 times versus 89 losses, winning over 76 percent of their games. His teams at North won three Third Region championships, with his 2002-‘03 squad posting a solid 27-3 mark. In all, he has coached for 26 years.
When contacted about his new position, Sparks said, “(I’m) very thankful for the opportunity to coach at Ohio County. I look forward to continue the strong tradition of the basketball program.”
The new hire was announced by Schools Superintendent Scott Lewis at the April 23 Ohio County School Board meeting. Lewis also confirmed Sparks' son Patrick, a former Western Kentucky University and University of Kentucky basketball player, was expected to join his dad's staff as a volunteer coach.
