KSP: 7 die on Ky. roadways last week

Preliminary statistics indicate that seven people died in seven separate crashes on Kentucky’s roadways from Monday, Aug. 26 through Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, according to a press release from the Kentucky State Police. One single-fatality, motor vehicle crash occurred in each of the following counties: Bell, Clay, Garrard, Harlan, Jefferson, Jessamine and Knott. The victims in Bell, Clay, Harlan and Knott counties were not wearing seat belts. The crashes in Clay and Harlan counties involved the suspected use of alcohol. One of the fatalities reported above occurred during the Labor Day holiday period, which started at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30 and ended at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 2. The crash occurred in Bell County. The victim was not wearing a seat belt. The 2013 Labor Day holiday period statistics are lower than those reported for the 2012 Labor Day holiday period when nine people lost their lives in nine crashes. Eight of last year’s Labor Day Holiday period fatalities were not wearing seat belts or using helmets and four were the result of crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol. Through Sept. 2, 2013, preliminary statistics indicate that 410 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2013. This is 88 less than reported for this time period in 2012. Of the 316 motor vehicle fatalities, 160 victims were not wearing seat belts. Thirty-eight of the 57 motorcycle fatalities were not wearing helmets. The six ATV fatalities were not wearing helmets. One bicycle rider has been killed. Twenty-nine pedestrians have been killed. One fatality involving an animal drawn vehicle has been reported. A total of 91 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol. As of Sept. 2, Kentucky has had 62 days with zero highway fatalities reported during 2013. Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
