The National Weather Service (NWS) has been on top of the approaching winter storm since the beginning and has just given an update on what to expect over the next 24 hours or so. At this point, Ohio County is under a Winter Storm Warning, which begins at 10 a.m. and ends at noon on Thursday. Ohio County is also under a Flood Advisory until 5:45 p.m. this evening and a Flood Watch until 6 p.m. According to the NWS, moderate rain will continue into this afternoon. By the time rain changes over to snow, the Flood Watch area will have received two to three inches of rain. Rain will change over to sleet and then to snow this afternoon through this evening. Up to a tenth of an inch of freezing rain may be possible during the change over from rain to sleet to snow. Snow fall will be heavy at times with the highest snowfall rates being up to two inches of snow per hour. The NWS is calling for 8 to 11+ inches of snow for Ohio County and the surrounding area. Snow will end by mid to late morning on Thursday. Major travel disruptions will be possible Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning. Plan on snow covered roads and dangerous travel conditions. Snow rates may be intense, resulting in rapid accumulations. North winds will gust up to 20 mph this afternoon and tonight. Gusty winds combined with the weight of the snow could result in scattered power outages and downed trees. Arctic air behind the storm will send low temperatures Friday morning to around or below zero, with some valleys even colder. These will be record or near record low temperatures for the entire month of March. If you must travel, be prepared and stay safe.
