Last Friday at the Ohio County Park, the Chamber of Commerce held its 10th annual Sparks in the Park. Spectators packed the park and lined up along U.S. Highway 231 and Country Club Road to see the fireworks on a somewhat chilly Fourth of July. Sparks in the Park began in 2005 as a project of the Ohio County Chamber Leadership Development class. The event has been free to the public and sponsored by donations from local businesses. Lately, the event has been almost entirely sponsored by donations from the Ohio County Fiscal Court and this year, by the Beaver Dam Tourism Commission. The event is staffed by volunteers and is assisted by the staff of the Ohio County Park and Fairgrounds. Last Thursday, the Chamber of Commerce issued a press release explaining the Beaver Dam Tourism Commission would take over the event beginning in 2015.  During the June meeting of the Chamber of Commerce's Board of Directors, the Beaver Dam Tourism Commission made a proposal to take over the event beginning in 2015. The Chamber of Commerce would be a co-sponsor for the 2015 Sparks in the Park. The Chamber's Board of Directors agreed to the proposal.  Chris Hunt, the president of the Chamber of Commerce, said the decision to turn over the event to the Beaver Dam Tourism Commission was based on a number of factors and more planning will be done leading up to the 2015 event. According to Beaver Dam Mayor Paul Sandefur, and member of the Beaver Dam Tourism Commission, no plans have been solidified for next year's event at this time. "The (Beaver Dam Tourism) Commission has tossed some ideas around, but nothing has been set in concrete as to the logistics of the 2015 event," Sandefur said. "(The Tourism Commission) probably won't make any formal announcement about the 2015 event before the first of the year, although anything can change."
